HEALTHY LIFE TIPS:
Healthy Diet
Congratulations, you guessed it! Having a healthy diet that you are consistent with throughout your life is extremely important for living the healthiest life possible. This is no secret to anyone and it has always been marked as the number one way to live a healthy life free of illness/disease/health complications. The benefits of having and maintaining a healthy diet for adults are extensive. This include things like having strong bones, supporting muscles, lowering risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and cancer, helps the digestive system function properly, improves longevity and keeps skin, teeth, hair and eyes healthy. Not to mention that having a healthy diet significantly boosts the immune system, is critical for maintaining your optimal body weight and does wonders for boosting your mood.
Adequate exercise
Surprise!…just kidding. Just like having a healthy diet is extremely important, it is not secret that getting and adequate amount of exercise each day is extremely important for living a healthy life. Exercising daily is incredible for improving your health, including improving your brain health, helps to manage weight, reduces the risk of disease, strengthens muscles and bones and also boosts energy. As you can probably tell from just those few examples, diet and exercise go hand in hand with being the top two most important things in leading the healthy life you’ve always dreamed of.
Elimination of smoking/tobacco/vaping products
If this post was written ten years ago, this would only really pertain to smoking and tobacco products. However, in the recent years companies have developed a series of vaping products that are widely popular amongst younger generations. However, these products are proving over time to have seriously negative side effects on the body, mind and overall health. This is only including what has been found in the last several years, so who knows what the true long-term side effects are of these products. Judging from just how bad the short-term side effects are…you do not want to wait to find out.
While this has been a common side effect for smoking, the same holds true for vaping: use of these products are horrible for your heart and lungs. Nicotine is a toxic substance that raises blood pressure, spikes your adrenaline and increases your heart rate which makes you more susceptible to heart attacks. Dizziness, burning or scratchy feeling in your mouth, lips and throat, shortness of breath and headaches are just a few immediate side effects. I don’t know about you, but I can’t imagine living day to day with feeling these feelings. There is no part of living a truly healthy and happy life that comes from using any kind of smoking/vaping or tobacco product. Not to mention, smoking not only puts your life at risk, but it also reduces the quality of life and puts those around you at risk for things like lung cancer. More people have died from lung cancer from breathing in secondhand smoke than from those who smoke it themselves. If you aren’t doing it for you, do it for your family members, you do NOT want to put the ones you love at risk for your own selfish behavior.
Maintain a healthy body weight
This may seem very easy and very difficult at the same time. Easy because obviously, living a healthy life means you’d be at an ideal weight. However, staying at a healthy body weight can be extremely hard as many people are obese. Not just out of shape, but obese. The level of obesity in children alone has climbed to alarmingly high rates, and obesity is linked to more illnesses and health conditions than anything else. If you find that you are overweight and discouraged, just remember this: losing weight is much harder than maintaining. So once you’ve lost the weight, it will be much easier to keep the goal weight you reached than it was to get there. Eliminate alcohol
I know, this one is going to be tough to hear, but this is probably the biggest factor in what separates truly healthy people from those that just aren’t. Alcohol has so many damaging effects on the body that even having one drink here or there builds up over time and simply put, it’s not worth having in your system. If you are someone who likes to go out and drink regularly, get used to subbing your alcohol for diet drinks, water with lemon, or unsweetened iced tea. I know this is going to take time to work on for some people, so perhaps it may be best to avoid friends that are continuously going out and getting wasted and find friends that like to go on hikes instead to avoid the temptation.
Meditate/Pray or find some sort of solace for 10-20 minutes a day
While working out, eating healthy, and cutting out things like alcohol and smoking/vaping/tobacco products are crucial to living a healthy life, there is one small thing you could be doing daily that could make a HUGE impact on your health, wellness and overall happiness: meditation. Meditation, prayer and mindfulness activities like such have been proven to be highly effective in lowering our reactivity to traumatic or negative events. These mindfulness activities also reduce stress, increase endorphins and help build confidence and security. There is no way to be living a truly healthy life without feeling confident in yourself and secure not only in your presence but also your decisions. Most people think that meditation takes hours to perform but in reality, it can be as small as taking a few minutes to close your eyes, breathe deeply, and completely empty your mind of all thoughts, good or bad, and just focusing on your presence and breathing. Starting your day with ten to twenty minutes of this practice has been proven to significantly boost your mood for the rest of the day and help reframe the way you think, feel and respond to different situations.
Smile and laugh out loud every day
Now this one may actually surprise you, but it is crucial for having a healthy life that you are truly enjoying your life while you’re living it. The biggest key to smiling and laughing out loud every day would be to incorporate things into your daily routine that you truly love to do, whether that is watching your favorite movies/tv shows, reading your favorite book, waking up early to walk outside and watch the sun rise, or making time to talk to and hangout with your friends on a regular basis. Smiling and laughing has been proven to reduce stress and physical tension throughout the body as well as lower stress hormones, including cortisol. In fact, it actually increases endorphins and helps increase your oxygen levels while reducing blood pressure. While it may seem like a very simple, easy thing, it is critical to smile and laugh on a regular basis to achieve your dream healthy lifestyle.
