TOP 9 SUCCESSFUL WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM COMPONENTS:
Healthy Eating
While this first one may seem a little obvious, it cannot be stressed enough. This is the most essential part of a weight loss program: healthy eating. You’ve probably heard the phrase: abs are made in the kitchen. This comes from the importance of a healthy and balanced diet being the most important part to your weight loss goals, secondary to any physical activity you may be including. Don’t get me wrong, working out is also extremely important. But eating healthy consistently is what is key to keeping your body long term once you’ve reached your goal physique.
Some things to look out for: a lot of coaches will stress that it does not matter what you eat, as long as you stay in a certain caloric range. While this may work for a select few people, this tends to develop very poor habits and giant gaps in nutrition down the road. For example, if your maintenance calories are 1,500, just eating 1,500 calories a day in ice cream will still technically be in that range, but you will not have the right amount of proteins, fats, carbs, and micronutrients your body needs to survive and function properly. If you have a coach that tells you that eating whatever you want is fine as long as you stay within that number of calories, run.
The perfect program will emphasize the importance of incorporating several forms of natural, whole foods, like fruits and vegetables and lean forms of meat and grains. There are so many important vitamins and minerals that are in these healthy foods that simply cannot be supplemented with only a multivitamin.
Exercise
Just like the first one, this one will also seem obvious. It is no secret that exercising is important for a healthy lifestyle, but there is more to this part that I want you to look for. When your coach implements exercise into your weight loss program, take into account the following things: did they ask you about your health history? Did he or she ask you about any underlying or preexisting health conditions, injuries or any illnesses you may have? Did they ask about your exercise history, your comfortability, and take into account your schedule when developing your workout routine to include days and times that fit well within your schedule so it is realistically sustainable for a long period of time? Did your coach give you a variety of workouts, or did they tell you to get on a treadmill and do straight cardio for two hours a day? Does your coach plan on checking in with you frequently, if they are not training with you, to properly monitor your progress and adjust the program as needed? Does your coach keep an open line of communication about exercise? One last important thing to consider: does your coach look healthy? There are so many people who try to pass themselves off as personal trainers who look like they do not take care of themselves. Now ask yourself, how do you expect to get any real results from a person that looks like they’ve never set foot in a gym? Think about that.
Behavioral Changes
The difference between a good coach and a great coach is one that will not only help you with your diet and exercise, but will also be encouraging you to build and grow in other aspects of your life, whether that’s from joining a new club, reading more books, or even helping you manage your spending. The best coaches are the ones that truly care about you as an individual and want to see you win in all aspects of life, not just with your appearance. They will be helping you take a look at your daily life and help develop healthy habits or routines that will improve your life. For example, your coach will be encouraging consistent sleep, being properly supported while you sleep, helping organize a grocery list, and so much more. You’d be amazed at the things Kaycie does to help her clients develop positive behavioral changes that help them stay on path with their goals and to prevent falling back into old routines.
Don’t limit to only a few foods
This one goes hand in hand with healthy eating. However, healthy eating does not mean your options are limited to only a few things. Your coach should be encouraging you to incorporate a variety of fruits and veggies to your diet. Your coach will also encourage you to get creative with your meals to see what kinds of healthy and delicious creations you can make while staying within your macro range. Just because you are on a goal to lose weight does not mean you need to be restricted to only eating just a few things. If all healthy people only ate a few foods and nothing else, the entire world would be obese. If you’ve been doing your research, you’ve probably noticed the amount of health and fitness professionals that are always finding new recipes that are low-calorie, gluten free, paleo, vegan, fat free, etc. The list is endless! There are so many amazing recipes on Instagram and Pinterest that will meet the needs of every individual and oftentimes work very well with satisfying any craving you may have, sweet or savory.
Your coach is responsive
While your success is ultimately determined by the amount of work you put in, a large part of your success also depends on your coaches ability to respond promptly to your needs and help when needed. When your coach responds, they should be polite and professional, and not complain about the questions you may have. However, if you ask the same question a thousand times and keep forgetting, that may warrant a little irritation so keep that in mind also. One thing that is extremely important is that you fully listen to the things your coach tells you and try to remember as much of it as humanly possible. It really helps to keep a separate journal or notebook, this can be made in the notes section of your phone, of all the things your coach tells you. This will come in handy in case you can’t quite recall the entire conversation you had. This way you avoid repeating the same question and can have notes to refer back to if you forget anything and can also be used for reference for the future.
Your coach listens to your concerns
This one may come as a shock (just kidding) that it’s important for your coach to listen to your concerns, but it is seriously so important. There is a difference between hearing you and waiting for the right time to interject and actually listening to the things you are telling them. If your coach has a problem with sitting in silence for a few minutes while you thoroughly explain a situation or concern, you need to find another coach that will be open to listening to anything you have to tell them, no matter how big or small the concern.
Several forms of data are considered
Just like how there is not one kind of program that works for everyone, there is not only one measurement tool that works for everyone. Your coach should be taking into consideration several things when monitoring your success, not just by the number on the scale. There are improvements with your physical appearance, body measurements, strength and stability increases, and reaching of milestones like being able to run a full mile without stopping. The more elements that are taken into account and being measured the better to create a more wholistic approach to the results and finding what is the best for you.
You see positive changes in several aspects of your life
Now this one may come as a surprise, but it’s true! Once you are on the perfect weight loss program for YOU, you’ll realize how the other parts of your life will start to improve. For example, you’ll notice you have more energy, happiness levels will increase, you’ll feel more motivated and more confident in yourself and your abilities. You’ll probably be open to doing more activities with your friends and family and you’ll be able to fit into clothes you haven’t worn in a long time. You’ll notice a decrease in stress, your skin may even have a glow to it. Once you find the right program, you will notice several amazing things happen as you make progress.
You aren’t feeling too stressed or run down
Starting a weight loss program comes with its struggles, but there is a difference between healthy and unhealthy amounts of stress. If you find that you are too depleted from not eating enough calories or in a lot of pain from your workouts being too intense, then it’s time to take a step back and re-adjust. The right coach will listen openly about your concerns, monitor the symptoms you’re having and will be able to properly adjust your program so you are feeling pushed at a healthy level rather than one that is putting your body in a constant fight or flight mode. If you voice these concerns and your coach does not seem to respond to your needs accordingly, it’s time to find a new one. Luckily, this is one of my strongest assets. My clients love how quickly I am able to respond to messages and how open I am to adjusting their programs as necessary. Sign up for any program of mine and you’ll see for yourself.
